Automation is a process design problem
AI does not remove the need for an owner, a trigger and a definition of done. It is good at messy language and variation. It is a poor excuse for skipping the map of who is allowed to change a customer record.
Jobs AI can reasonably take
These show up often in operations and support.
- Classifying incoming requests so the right queue sees them.
- Extracting fields from documents with a review step for low confidence.
- Drafting a reply that a person edits.
- Summarizing a long thread before a meeting.
Jobs that should stay deterministic
If the rule is “if amount is over X, require two approvals,” you do not need a model. You need a workflow. Mixing the two is how companies create un-auditable decisions.
Measure the exception rate
A useful pilot tracks how often a person has to intervene. If everything is an exception, you automated a press release, not a process.
