A website’s job
A website explains, persuades and routes someone to a next step: a call, a form, a store. It can be rich, but the visitor is usually not operating a system of record. Content, performance and search structure matter more than transactional state.
A web application’s job
A web application is software that happens to run in a browser. People sign in, change data, trigger workflows and come back tomorrow to continue. Permissions, validation, audit trails and APIs sit at the center.
Why the mix-up is expensive
If you ask for a “website” and then describe approvals, roles and integrations, you will get a theme that cannot carry the load. If you ask for an “app” when you needed a service site, you will overbuild and under-publish.
